Cummins selected for Dow Jones sustainability World Index (2005-9-9)

Dow Jones has added Cummins Inc. to its Sustainability World Index of 2005, which represents the top 10 percent of the worlds largest 2,500 companies.
Cummins says its addition to the index is a recognition of the company\’s economic, environmental and social leadership.

The updated index will be unveiled at the opening of the equity markets on Sept. 19.

Of its 28,000 employees nationwide, Cummins employs about 450 people in Memphis, where it makes and remanufactures diesel components and engines.

Cummins is one of 44 global companies incluced in the World Index\’s industrial goods and services sector and only one of two U.S. companies added to that sector this year.

Dow Jones considers several issues when reviewing a company for inclusion: corporate governance, codes of conduct, environmental policy and procedures and the scope of their application, environmental management systems, corporate citizenship and philanthropy, labor practices and employee development.

"Cummins strives to be a good steward of all its resources — whether it is our environmental resources of facilities and products, the development of our human resources, or the use of financial resources to enhance the communities in which we work and live," said Christine Vujovich, vice president of Environmental Policy and Corporate Marketing, in a statement.

Cummins, which is based in Columbus, Ind., serves customers in more than 160 countries through its network of 550 company-owned and independent distributor facilities and more than 5,000 dealer locations. The company reported sales of $8.4 billion in 2004.
