What began as an "old tin shed" in rural Cedar Falls has evolved into the creative center for the best-selling tractors and agricultural equipment in the world.

And it celebrates its 50th birthday today and Saturday.

The John Deere Product Engineering Center marked its 50th anniversary of existence today and Saturday with a celebration for its current and former employees and their families.

From the so-called "New Generation" of Deere tractors conceived in the mid 1950s, to the mammoth 8000 and 9000 series tractors of today, the PEC "has been a linchpin for the company\’s global expansion sustained profitability and ongoing growth," said Klaus Hoehn, Deere\’s director of worldwide tractor and component engineering.

The PEC is Deere\’s largest engineering facility. "It is also the largest tractor and component engineering facility in the agricultural machinery business worldwide," company officials said.

"Unique in our industry and only at PEC, we have…the most advanced modeling and test laboratories, in our field," said Adel Zakaria, Deere\’s senior vice president of manufacturing and engineering, and a former general manager of Deere\’s Waterloo operations.

In addition to tractors, Deere\’s heavy duty diesel engines for worldwide markets are designed and developed at PEC, by "350 skilled engine engineers and technicians," using " sophisticated analysis tools and state of the art engine test facilities," said Mike Weinert, director of worldwide engine engineering with John Deere Power Systems.

PEC engineers collaborate with engineering centers in Germany, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, India and China, as well as company suppliers and researchers across the U.S. as well as within the Cedar Valley. Deere officials cited the "robust and sustained support of the Cedar Valley" as key in the PEC\’s and the company\’s success.

"Today, Waterloo\’s Product Engineering Center has grown to an organization of approximately 1,200 employees over 15 countries," Hoehn said. That includes nonunion employees and wage workers affiliated with United Auto Workers Local 838. UAW shop chairman Mike McRoberts of PEC, and Deere\’s Westfield Avenue, Foundry and Donald Street Tractor Works sites also participated in the celebration, which continues Saturday.

On a sweltering August morning, dozens of diesel freight trucks bound for Beijing sit on the mountainside off-ramps of the Badaling Freeway, where sweating drivers spray a cooling mist on brakes hot from the descent.

Convoys of the big trucks roar past, carrying sacks of rice, stacks of celery and loads of fresh vegetables destined for the grocers and cafes that serve Beijing\’s 14 million residents.

Long known for rickshaws and rice paddies, China today is characterized by machine tools and assembly lines, 300 million workers and a bustling freight-truck market that reaches all the way to Southern Indiana.

Columbus diesel maker Cummins Inc., one of Indiana\’s oldest manufacturers, earns multimillion-dollar profits as a leading diesel supplier in China, producing engines in its Chinese joint-venture plants.

Factory workers across Indiana and the United States fear exports from low-wage Chinese industries could wipe out their jobs.

While exports do help drive the modern Chinese economy, the country is not simply a low-wage assembly line for the world. China is spending billions on its own economy, putting up buildings, constructing roads and expanding truck fleets.

"Everything we make in China we can sell in China," said John Watkins Jr., a Cummins vice president who runs the company\’s 5,000-employee China operations from a skyscraper in Beijing.

U.S. congressional members have weighed in with a series of proposals that would limit Chinese exports to the United States, which were valued last year at nearly $200 billion. But what is going on in China is more than just exporting.

Economists estimate about 40 percent of all goods made by foreign companies in China are exported back to their home countries. The other 60 percent tend to be used locally.

From the southern metropolis of Shenzhen up the coast to Beijing and over to the remote inland city of Xiangfan, China is in consumption mode.

Cummins\’ executives insist their aim isn\’t replacing U.S. engines with Chinese exports. They say the focus is China, a country so large, stretching 3,100 miles from the Himalayas to the Yellow Sea, they call it a market in itself.

"We\’re looking to double our sales here over the next five years," Watkins said.

"This is another strong signal that Caterpillar engines with ACERT Technology provide our customers with the reliability and durability they have come to expect from a Cat product while also offering emissions solutions in this application," said James J. Parker, Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for the Power Systems Marketing Division.

The new fleet of buses will be manufactured by North American Bus Industries, Inc. (NABI) and will feature Caterpillar C9 engines. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority has exercised options to purchase 92 clean diesel buses from NABI.

"This is a great opportunity for NABI to once again provide clean-diesel buses to one of our larger customers," said Bill Coryell, NABI Vice President of Sales. "We expect about half of these buses to be delivered before the end of this year with the remaining buses to be delivered in 2006."

Caterpillar entered the urban transit engine market when the company formed its bus and specialty vehicle group in 2001. Since then, a growing number of transit authorities, from Honolulu to Boston, have purchased buses powered by the Caterpillar C9 engine.

"The historic durability of diesel engines is well known, but the traditional perception is that they are not environmentally friendly, which is no longer the case," said Joe Calabrese, general manager and chief executive officer of RTA. "To further enhance this new engine technology, RTA is one of the first transit systems in the nation to use ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel for even cleaner emissions. These new clean-diesel buses will play a key role in helping the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority meet its goal of having an entire fleet that is environmentally friendly."

The C9 with ACERT Technology offers customers in the urban transit industry emissions that are even lower than EPA\’s stringent 2004 emissions guidelines. Those standards require more exacting tests to demonstrate lower emissions over longer periods of time. Since being introduced, more than 200,000 engines with ACERT Technology have been sold for on-highway use. Additionally, Caterpillar has reduced emissions in North American on-highway engines by nearly 90 percent since 1988, with an additional 90 percent reduction to follow by 2007.

"This sale to RTA is typical of the trend Caterpillar is seeing within the public transportation industry as there has been a tremendous increase in demand for Caterpillar engines featuring ACERT Technology to help transit authorities looking to meet stringent emission standards," Parker said.

ACERT is a differentiated, breakthrough technology that reduces emissions at the point of combustion. The technology will also be used as the foundation to meet future emission regulations for the company\’s entire diesel engine product line, including construction and mining machines and power generation units.

Caterpillar is the leading manufacturer and supplier of truck and bus engines in the combined medium- and heavy-duty categories in North America, holding the lead position in engine shipments to vehicle manufacturers since 1999. Caterpillar is also a leading supplier of clean diesel school bus engines in North America.
(source:cat)

Construction equipment maker Terex Corp., which has been working to correct accounting errors in its financial statements dating back to 2000, on Friday disclosed a fresh set of bookkeeping issues that will require it to restate its financials for the first-half of 2004.

Terex said it needs to reverse tax-related charges to its earnings in the first and second quarters of last year, increasing net income in those periods by about $2.4 million and $7.4 million, respectively.

Terex, which hasn\’t filed a financial report with regulators since August 2004, said it has been working to turn in its financial statements for 2004 and earlier by next Thursday, when a related default waiver from its banks expires.

The company expects to reduce its previously reported stockholders\’ equity of $877 million as of Dec. 31, 2003, to $690 million. Stockholders\’ equity at Dec. 31, 2004, is expected to be $1.1 billion.

Based on its latest findings, Terex said it plans to put new accounting practices and controls and place to address its bookkeeping issues.

Shares of the company rose 58 cents to $48.78 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The company\’s shares have traded between $32.70 and $52.25 over the past 52 weeks.
