Toronto\'s INCO LTD. plans to build a new Utility?nickel plant in the city of Dalian. The new plant will supply the needs of stainless steel makers in the fast-growing Chinese market. Calling congestion one of the single largest threats to the economy, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta recently announced a new national initiative to tackle highway, freight and aviation congestion.During remarks to the National Retail Federation, Mineta said that "congestion kills time, wastes fuel and costs money."He noted that America loses an estimated $200 billion a year due to freight bottlenecks and delayed deliveries. The Secretary added that consumers lose 3.7 billion hours and 2.3 billion gallons of fuel sitting in traffic jams and that airline delays waste $9.4 billion a year."Congestion is not a fact of life," Mineta said. Atlas Copco has inaugurated a new compressor manufacturing plant in Liuzhou in Southern China. The production unit will produce oil-injected screw compressors and portable compressors, mainly of the Liutech brand for the Asian market. The new facility, which is part of the Compressor Technique business area, will organize production in a more efficient and modern way in order to address a need for increased capacity. The investment, worth more than $6.1 million, is not only in a production plant, but also includes a customer center and a product development facility, employing in total 273 people. China and Germany have reached consensus on technology transfer and other key issues regarding the construction of a four-billion-euro maglev line linking Shanghai and Hangzhou cities in east China, a well-informed Chinese official said here Monday. Wu Xiangming, director of the China national maglev transportation technology research center, told the fourth China Germany High-Technology Dialog Forum the two sides have agreed on the operation model of the project, the division of general responsibilities, technology transfer and the delivery of electromechanical equipment.
